Venice Sunrise by Kate Holstein
Location: Venice Beach, CA
Date: February 2015
Liquid and light are my two greatest muses. They are ever changing and mysterious by nature. When they come together in perfect harmony it creates the most etherial, almost other worldly, images. I have never known any of my surf subjects, which is why I tend to portray them anonymously, as black figures dancing on a sea of liquid and light. I find the art of surfing incredibly beautiful. It’s powerful yet peaceful, subtle yet strong. It is the union of human and nature simply for fun. The space I occupy behind the lens while shooting surfing and the ocean is almost the same as actually surfing; everything but that moment ceases to exist. It’s the ultimate state of presence. I wish to convey a sense of beauty, serenity, power and vastness through this ocean series captured throughout the world.
